Sie können bis zu 60 Minuten tauchen, halten sich aber meist an der Wasseroberfläche auf. Sie haben wenig Feinde zu fürchten. Nur wenn sie Jagd auf Nixen machen, pirschen sie sich direkt am Meeresboden heran, sie können weit über 40m tief tauchen. Um zu schlafen oder auszuruhen (was einen großen Teil ihrer Tagesbeschäftigung darstellt), ziehen sie sich gerne auf Plattformen zurück, die sie mit sich ziehen oder manchmal auch im Meer lebende Tiere dafür halten. Auch Nahrungsvorräte und Gerätschaften werden meist in den überdachten, laubenartigen Plattformen gelagert. Es gibt sogenannte Fraßhütten, die mehrere Löcher im Boden haben, durch die die Meeresteufel, im Wasser schwimmend, einfach ihre Oberkörper schieben können, um auf Ellbogen gestützt ihre Mahlzeiten zu verzehren.
